Richard Hatch is best known as the groundbreaking winner of Survivor: Borneo (2000), the first season of the iconic reality competition. A corporate trainer from Rhode Island, Hatch quickly established himself as a strategic pioneer, introducing the alliance-based gameplay that became central to Survivor. His cunning strategy, confidence, and polarizing personality made him both admired and controversial. Following his win, he returned for Survivor: All-Stars (2004), where he was voted out early. Outside the show, Hatch’s life has included acting, writing, and legal controversies, including a conviction for tax evasion. Despite ups and downs, Hatch remains a defining figure in reality television history, often credited with shaping the game of Survivor and setting the tone for competitive strategy in modern reality TV.

QUOTES

Quote
“But the key to winning: adapt. That’s what I’ve said since Survivor 24 years ago. That’s the key to winning. You’ve got to be able to instantaneously adapt.”
Quote
“The world saw me as a villain. I understood that the word meant something to people that wasn’t reflective of what it means in the dictionary. … I’ll do whatever it takes in a game, and that’s villainous to somebody.”
Quote
“I’m not there to make buddies and not have conflict. I don’t care. Let’s have some conflict. I’m fine with all of it. I want to win.”
Quote
“I’m good to go survival-wise. People-wise, it’ll be a little, a little more challenging. But I’ve got the million-dollar check written already. I mean, I’m the winner.”
