Indira Gandhi, India's first and only female Prime Minister to date, wielded significant political influence during her tenure from 1966 to 1977 and again from 1980 until her assassination in 1984. She led India through turbulent times, implementing policies aimed at modernization and social reform. Despite her popularity, her leadership was controversial, marked by authoritarian tendencies and the declaration of the Emergency in 1975. Gandhi's assassination in 1984 brought an end to an era of both admiration and criticism for her contributions to Indian politics.
