Péter Magyar is the current Hungarian Prime Minister. He is a lawyer, politician and former diplomat who rose to national prominence in 2024 as a leading opponent of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and his Fidesz government. Once connected to Hungary’s governing establishment through senior public-sector roles and his former marriage to Justice Minister Judit Varga, Magyar broke publicly with Fidesz and became an outspoken critic of corruption, political patronage and the concentration of power. He subsequently emerged as the leader of the Tisza Party, which rapidly became Hungary’s strongest opposition force. Magyar has presented himself as a centre-right alternative to both Fidesz and Hungary’s traditional opposition, emphasizing government accountability, stronger public services and a more constructive relationship with the European Union. His rapid political ascent has made him one of the most consequential figures in contemporary Hungarian politics.
