Federico Faggin is an Italian-American physicist, engineer, inventor, and author. He led the design of the first commercial microprocessor, the Intel 4004, in 1971. At Fairchild Semiconductor in 1968, he developed the self-aligned MOS silicon-gate technology. Faggin co-founded Zilog, introducing the influential Z80 microprocessor, and later founded Synaptics, contributing to touchpad and touchscreen technologies. His numerous accolades include the National Medal of Technology and Innovation. In recent years, Faggin has focused on the scientific study of consciousness, establishing the Federico and Elvia Faggin Foundation in 2011 to support research in this field.
