J. Robert Oppenheimer (1904-1967) was an American theoretical physicist, often referred to as the "father of the atomic bomb." His leadership in the Manhattan Project during World War II led to the creation of the first nuclear weapons. After the war, Oppenheimer held important advisory roles in shaping U.S. science policy. Remembered as a complex, philosophical figure, Oppenheimer left an indelible mark on the scientific, political, and ethical landscape of the 20th century. Oppenheimer studied multiple languages and had a deep interest in Eastern philosophy, particularly the Bhagavad Gita, a 700-verse Hindu scripture. He famously quoted it upon witnessing the first nuclear test, stating, "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds."
